my take on Wednesday |
| Only four shows remain in-slot from last fall, making Wednesday the most juggled night of the week. ABC has a newly slotted one, one of the returning ones and a brand-new one for a pretty good lineup. The Eye adds one of the few new shows that I'm intrigued by. Columbia Warner (yup, that's where the initials came from) take one of each from its parents. Fox starts without a Results show, but gets one in February. NBC changes its entire lineup, marking the first time since 1991 that there's no Law & Order on Wednesday.
ABC will mostly likely own the first half of the season on Wednesday. There's a Dancing portion and then the Idol time. The Alphabet starts the night with the Dancing with the Stars Results Show. It'll take the slot. Lost and Daybreak fill the 9pm hour. How do two shows take the same slot? Losties (including this author) aren't going to be happy about this. ABC has created a scheduling donut. Lost fills the sides, Daybreak, the hole. In this case, the hole is 13 weeks, starting Novemeber 15. Lost will run the remaining 16 weeks non-stop (read: no repeats) after Daybreak concludes. (NBC is doing a similar thing with ER, but aren't talking about it like ABC.) Following Lost, is The Nine. The slot isn't that competitive, although it would be better to build an audience during the first six weeks that Lost is on. In addition to Daybreak, George Lopez and According to Jim move into the 8pm slot after Dancing with the Stars concludes. Am I the only one to ask why?
CBS rolls its night with Jericho. It's another one that I'm looking forward to. Criminal Minds (a minor hit from last season) takes the post at 9 and CSI: NY closes it out at 10. Expect some retooling in the Big Apple for season 3.
America's Next Top Model and One Tree Hill survive the merger and make up the CW Wednesday. There will be no records broken here, in fact, it might just be the final season for One Tree Hill. Beauty and the Geek takes over at 8 after Model finishes its cycle.
Fox takes Bones and gives it a nice slot at 8. It'll hold well against Dancing with the Stars. I'm not sure about it against Jericho. Justice starts the year at 9 and if it survives, slides into the 8pm slot in January/February that because American Idol Results takes over at 9. Once again, Fox gives The Loop another shot in the post-"Idol slot. The Loop isn't horrible, but why not place something that really good in that slot?
NBC starts its night with the only two sitcoms of the night. The John Lithgow-Jeffrey Tambor laffer Twenty Good Years is followed by Tina Fey's 30 Rock. I know 30 Rock has received some buzz, but I'd say if you want to see these two, watch 'em quickly. Then again, if you want a comedy (actual laugh content may vary), this is your only stop all night long. The Biggest Loser uses Wednesday to hit the gym, while the new Kidnapped perches at 10. The whole night does not excite me.
My continues its stripped run of Desire and Fashion House.
Wednesday's Top 3 from September are Dancing with the Stars: Results, Lost and Jericho.
Wednesday's Top 3 beginning in January are American Idol Results, Lost (ok, February) and Jericho. |
