The Event is an emotional, high-octane conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker, an everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his would-be fiancee Leila, and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-up in U.S. history.

Sean's quest will send ripples through the lives of an eclectic band of strangers, including newly elected U.S. President Elias Martinez; Sophia Maguire, who is the leader of a mysterious group of detainees; and Leila's shadowy father. Their futures are on a collision course in a global conspiracy that could ultimately change the fate of mankind.

my take
I want so badly to like this. I know NBC wants me to like it. I have a feeling this is going to be a failure, making NBC wish they brought Heroes back for its fifth season. (OK, maybe not that bad.) Nearly everyone in the cast is recognizable, if not name-able. NBC appears to be using The Event to fill the mythology/conspiracy hole vacated by Lost. They've been promoting this incessentally throughout the summer, but sadly, I don't think it's going to help. I hope I'm wrong, but watch it early just in case I'm not.
